What is
Stainless Steel 440 Round Bars?
Stainless Steel440 Round bar is part of stainless steels or alloy steels containing at least
10% chromium, impregnating these alloys with improved corrosion resistance.
All 440
steels are hardenable, which means that, by heat treatment, they achieve
additional strength and are considered a high carbon alloy steel. 440 steels
are the strongest of all stainless steels when strengthened using this process,
making them both abrasion-resistant and corrosion-resistant.
Corrosion Resistance
While most
stainless steels are resistant to rusting, 440 steels are a little less
resistant to corrosion. This is the outcome of its martensitic composition,
which increases its hardness but leaves it more vulnerable to corrosion than
stainless steels that are austenitic and ferritic. This is not to say that as
they are more corrosion-resistant than most steels, 440 steel rusts quickly,
but recognize that it should not be picked simply for its resistance to rust.
Mechanical
Properties
440 steel,
as can be seen by its ultimate and tensile yield strengths, has impressively
high strengths. These measurements come from experimental stress experiments,
in which a 440 steel sample is axially pulled apart and its stress v/s. stress
is plotted on a curve.
440 steel,
which is known to be very difficult, has a Rockwell hardness of 58. Hard steels
used for blade edges have a hardness of 60, for comparison, so it is obvious
that 440 steel is very resilient to deformation of the surface.

has a high elasticity modulus, which ensures that it does not readily succumb to
stress, making it a stiff material overall.
Applications
of 440 Stainless Steel
In most
machine shops, steel 440 can be found, as it is an easy metal to machine when
annealed and yet solid and durable when heat treated. For components that must
withstand corrosion reasonably well and yet not wear under repeated usage, this
material is exceptionally fine. It is a perfect steel for knife tips, as its
hardness yet formability excels when used for kitchen cutlery. They are also used

class of stainless steels are alloyed with chromium and are ferritic or
martensitic in structure. 440 steel actually refers to three types of steel:
440A, 440B & 440C Steel which only differ based on the level of carbon in
their composition.
440 A Stainless

440A is an
AOD melted high carbon martensitic stainless steel. This alloy can be heat
treated to a very high degree of hardness. It has significantly less carbon
than 440B and 440C, which gives it increased machinability but less hardness.
This alloy is an ideal candidate for cutting tools and knife blades because of
the combination of strong wear resistance and high hardness.
